The Former President's Woke Alarm Misses Europe's True Threat: Technological Decline.

Donald Trump's national security strategy presents a misguided assessment of Europe. The document asserts that open-border policies and what it terms "progressive" agendas represent an grave risk to the continent's identity. Yet, this argument is based on a serious misreading of the reality. The true challenge confronting Europe is not cultural but economic and technological backwardness.

A Glaring Economic Divide Separating Europe and the US

Statistics paint a stark picture. From 2008 and 2023, US GDP surged by 87%, while a mere 13.5% growth for the European Union. During this period, EU GDP per capita fell from over three-quarters to just 50% of the American figure. Strikingly, even the poorest US state now has a higher per capita income than several leading EU nations like France and Italy.

Today, about half of the world’s top fifty technology firms are American, while only four are European.

The Innovation Shortfall: A Critical Question

The growing disparity stems from superior efficiency gains in the United States, fueled by technological innovation and higher total factor productivity. The scene of global tech leadership is decidedly US-centric. In the last five decades, hundreds of American startups have scaled into companies valued at more than ten billion dollars, versus just 14 in Europe.

This disparity prompts a pressing question: As the competition for future industries like AI, semiconductors, and quantum computing, where does the EU positioned? Experts widely concede it is largely a contest between two between the US and China, with European nations entering at a significant disadvantage.

Root Causes of the Continent's Technological Lag

A number of key factors account for this technological divide.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The US boasts a far deeper and agile system for funding startups. The EU still lacks a genuine unified investment market, which limits the growth potential of new firms.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Excessive and fragmented rules hinder European business. A American entrepreneur can launch a service under a single set of laws to access a consumer base of over 330 million. The European Union, despite a larger population size, is split among twenty-seven separate regimes, creating huge internal barriers.
  • Mindset Differences: Views on entrepreneurial failure vary greatly. In some EU nations, business failure was once viewed with penalties, whereas in the US, it is often considered a valuable lesson.
  • Military Investment: The United States enjoys a tightly woven academic-military-industrial complex. Europe's long-term lack of spending in military capabilities has eroded its ability in pioneering research.

The Road Ahead: Grounds for Cautious Optimism

In spite of these challenges, one can find reasons for hope. Policymakers are increasingly aware of the severe threat and have begun to propose substantial change. Notable analyses on EU competitiveness and the single market point to the necessity of sweeping reforms.

With the right incentives and regulatory reforms, Europe's strengths might enable much higher degrees of business-led breakthroughs.

Europe still possesses significant advantages: skilled workforce, top-tier schools and universities, and world-class labs. Alongside a large internal market and high savings rates, these foundations have the potential to trigger a new wave of venture creation.

Crucially, even if Europe does not become the leader in developing cutting-edge technologies, it can still dramatically increase economic output by implementing and tailoring innovations from elsewhere.

An Inflection Point

Europe now faces a critical crossroads. As the saying goes, economic erosion often happens "gradually and then suddenly". So far, Europe's technological decline has been gradual. But, if it fails to take bold steps to tackle its structural weaknesses, today's gradual weakening could give way to a rapid and permanent loss of global economic relevance.
